~From Uncle Dick's Geneology Notes

As far back as recorded, two professions stand out prominently in the Carpenter and Baker families. From the time of Heinrich Zimmerman, who was himself a physician, down to the present, there has not been a generation without its doctor. Dr. Henry Carpenter, the first, practiced from (Dick's notes say: 1608 to 1797" I'm guessing- 1708-1797?) His son, Henry practiced from (Dick: "1725-1618" I'm guessing 1725-1818?) Dr. John Carpenter from ("1641-1889"), all living and practing in Lancaster County, PA. Dr. Seymour D. Carpenter practiced in Chicago and Dr. Paul Carpenter practiced in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from "1869-1907"

The second profession which has found many representatives in the family is the ministry.

Much has already been made of the work of Peter Baker as minister and missionary in Pennsylvania. The earliest Baker of which we have record is Balthazer Baker who lived and died in Amsterdam, Hokand, and who was himself a minister, carrying the degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology. Among the Carpenters we have Rev. William Zimmerman, later changed to Carpenter, who served the old German church in Madison County, Virginia. The Germans first built a log church in 1680. The records show that two sentinels, armed with muskets were posted at the entrance of the meeting house to guard the farmers, their wives and children while they were at worship. Rev. Samuel Carpenter was born in 1794 in Lancaster and became a minister. Several names of ministers appear on the records, but no facts about their work are obtainable.

Notes for Emmanuel (Zimmerman) CARPENTER:

At manhood he was over six feet tall with wide shoulders and heavy but not corpulent. For a part of 51 years he was at the head of the old Swiss and German element in Lancaster County, PA. He was elected Assessor of Cocolicco County in 1755; commissioned by the Crown as one of Her Majesty's Justice of the Peace in 1756; elected to the Provincial Assembly in 1759, where he served for 17 years; appointed by the Crown Presiding Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, which office he held until his death. He was associated with Benjamin Franklin when the Boston Port Bill was passed and the tea episode occurred (Boston Tea Party) in 1774. Emmanuel was 72 years old at this time and had been an officer of the Crown for 42 years but soon joined in the cause of liberation. During the war, Washington was in Lancaster several times in 1777 after the battle of Brandywine & Germantown, always stopping at the Black Bear, the principal hotel in Lancaster, operated by a son-in-law of Emmanuel.

164. George Peter BAKER, born 1680 in Straussberg, Germany. He was the son of 328. Balthaser BAKER.

Notes for George Peter BAKER:

Remembering the troubled history of the times and noting the changes of residence from Holland to Germany and then to America in succeeding generations by the children of George Peter Baker, who emigrated to this country, we can guess something of their reasons for these moves. It was an era of political and religious strife, and those not in harmony with the ruling of political or religious faith were forced either to submit, suffer persecution, or emigrate. From the record of these individuals, it can be understood that they were not the kind to submit to a change in their convictions or suffer persecution without protest. It is not surprising then, that they left the old home and came to America.

~From Uncle Dick's Genealogical Notes

Notes for Dr. Heinrich ZIMMERMAN:

Heinrich Zimmerman was called "Black Henry" because of his black hair and black eyes. Enlisted in the army of France in the service of Louise XIV. Returned to Switzerland in 1696- then was apprenticed to a doctor. He was 6' tall and very dark complected. He fell in love with a pretty girl in the neighboring village- Salome. He now began to make plans for the future. There was much talk at this time about the new world where freedom of conscience was guaranteed under the laws of Queen Anne. Heinrich heard of this and saw his opportunity. He was not able to marry the girl of his choice so he told her goodbye for a few years. This was still 1696. He went down the Rhine to Rotterdam and then to London. From London he went to Philadelphia and finally to Germantown, Pennsylvania. In 1701 he returned to Switzerland, married Salome and brought her to Germantown.

The town of Lancaster was founded in 1722. Heinrich, now a practicing physician, became Mayor of the town.
